Bio
Alex Wong is a Canadian-born dancer, actor, choreographer and creator whose career runs from classical ballet to Broadway, film, television and an online audience of more than five million.
He began tap and jazz at seven and ballet at ten, at the Goh Ballet Academy in Vancouver. In 2000 he won two Junior World Titles, in tap and showdance, and in 2004 he won a gold medal at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, the first Canadian to win the competition. He began his professional career with American Ballet Theatre, first in its Studio Company, and then joined Miami City Ballet as a principal dancer. His leading roles there included Balanchine’s Agon and Symphony in Three Movements and Twyla Tharp’s Push Comes to Shove and In the Upper Room.
In 2010 Alex left Miami City Ballet to compete on So You Think You Can Dance, where he became a finalist in season seven. A torn Achilles tendon ended his run, and a second Achilles injury followed a year later. He came back from both and has returned to the show as an All-Star over multiple seasons. Several of his duets, including routines by Mia Michaels and NappyTabs, have won Emmy Awards. He was also a semi-finalist on American Idol.
On Broadway he was an original cast member of Disney’s Newsies, as Sniper, and of the revival of The King and I. Newsies won two Tony Awards, and Alex earned a Grammy nomination for his work on the show.
He has danced for Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, the Jonas Brothers, Dolly Parton and Eminem. On screen he has appeared in The Greatest Showman, In the Heights, Ted 2, Glee, Fosse/Verdon, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Schmigadoon!, Étoile, Westworld and Disney’s Hip Hop Nutcracker, and on Saturday Night Live, Dancing with the Stars, The Voice and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Live television includes NBC’s Annie Live!, The Little Mermaid Live! and Peter Pan Live. He has performed at three Academy Awards ceremonies, the Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards and the MTV VMAs, among many others, and was a principal actor in Jon M. Chu’s Microsoft Surface commercial.
As a choreographer, Alex has worked with Carly Rae Jepsen and Laufey, on American Horror Story, and on several national commercials.
Alex travels the world teaching at dance conventions and creates dance content for more than five million followers across Instagram, TikTok, Threads and Facebook, as @alexdwong on Instagram and TikTok. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, has spoken at Yale, Northwestern, Dartmouth and Columbia, and is available for brand partnerships, choreography, teaching and appearances.
